The Empire State Building Essay Example For Students
The Empire State Building Essay The granddaddy of all skyscrapers and now a National Historic Landmark, the Empire State Building ESB, with its central Manhattan location, offers the best views of New York City. It is still one of the worlds tallest buildings. This New York icon was completed in 1931. Its famous Art Deco spire, visible throughout much of New York, is immortalized in countless movies, including King Kong and Sleepless in Seattle. The Empire State Building is located in Manhattan at 350 Fifth Avenue, between Thirty-third and Thirty-fourth Street. The buildings splendor and lift, its very being remain a magical presence, a cynosure for the citys residents, a Mecca for visitor. The idea for the empire State Building emerged from the culture and politics of New York in the early twentieth century, as Democratic presidential candidate Al smith spearheaded plans to erect the worlds tallest skyscraper in a competition with founder of the Chrysler Corp. The construction of the Empire State Building began in March of 1930. It was completed 14 months later in May 1931. It was designed by the architectural firm of Shreve, Lamb, Harmon Associate. The Empire State Building, at 102 stories, was the tallest building in the world until the completion of the first tower of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan in 1972. Its cost is $40,948,900. Include land building alone is $24,718,000. The building is 102 stories high. It is 1,472 feet to top of antennae; it is 1,250 feet to 102nd floor observatory; area of site is 79,288 square feet. Its structure materials include steel, concrete and brick. Its exterior materials include Indiana limestone and granite, trimmed with aluminum and chrome-nickel steel from the 6th floor to the top. Its interior lobby materials are ceiling high marble, imported from France, Italy, Belgium, and Germany. The foundation of the ESB is special that is strong enough to help holding this building up. When foundation was dug, and then a cast-iron sill was set into a base. A hollow, cylindrical column, were box columns with a core selection the heaviest rolled columns, was bolted perpendicular to the sill, When a pair of adjoining post was in place, a lintel was bolted to line them. The process continued horizontally and vertically, floors were laid, and a new style of building resulted. Interior spaces were a series of self-contained boxes, each an island, entire of itself. Since the units were self-supporting, there was no need for thick walls to support the load of the building, as a result, large expanses of windows punctuated by delicate cast-iron columns created a rhythmic balance outside and well-lit spaces inside. Banister, 1975 No only because its majesty that made it a miracle, but because of the harmony of design, with all the elements balanced in true classical form, is sheer elegance. Its style is Art Deco. Art Deco Architect in America took the squares, circles, and triangles of plant geometry and merged them with the cone, cube, and sphere of solid geometry to create their own sacred geometry. All of those can be see from the Empire State building. . The shape of the Empire State Building is modeled from a pencil held skyward. Polygons are seen throughout the entire building, inside and out. The most noticeable being about the windows, they are rectangular in shape. Average window size is 42 time 68-1/2 tall. The building top was outfitted with elaborate lighting to call attention to itself while enhancing the nighttime skyline with the play of light. Stainless steel, which uses in the ESB for the mullions that race up the sides, is one of the great secrets of the building subtlety and aesthetic satisfaction. On The Empire State Building the base and up to the second setback is stone that has been cut into sets of vertical, convex bands, rather like a three-dimensional scallop motif. .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 , .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 .postImageUrl , .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 , .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035:hover , .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035:visited , .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035:active { border:0!important; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035:active , .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035 .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u18ca197d6dbac15db4790ced88284035:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: African Architecture EssayThese bands make the lower part of the building appear stouter, and although they are the same limestone as the rest of the building, they nevertheless add coloration by virtue of the shadows they cast. The midsection seems firmer, more solid. From it, the upper tower rises unencumbered. The top five floors were chamfered, their corners cut away and softened so that the building reached a logical denouement. Chrome-nickel steels the color and texture of silver was used for the mullions that would run from the sixth to the eight-fifth stories. The marble walls inside the ESB lobby were devoid of ornamentation and carving except a subtle repetition of the convex grooving from the faÃÆ'Ã §ade. The designers theorized that by diminishing the decoration and by having great expanses of glass for the arcades virtues, the beauty of the marbles natural color and veining would stand out. The fifth Avenue lobby received light from the window-overlooking Fifth Avenue, but artificial illumination was provided by 150-wall light bulbs set into a shelf like cornice. The light was aimed upward and outward upon the ceiling, from which it bounced downward into the room, but not before highlighting the ceiling, which was decorated with gold, platinum, and aluminum leaf in a design of circles and stars. It would have a vertical strip of illumination, pencils of light, that would shine from within each of the four faceted faces to light up the night sky, while directional beacon lights would plays, giving the building an unmistakable character and adding to the drama of the nighttime skyline. In the tall thin part, the mast, there are 5 panels of fluorescent tubes red, blue, green, yellow white and those are turned automatically to the desired color. When u stand in the 102nd floor on clear days, we can see the surrounding countryside for distances up to 80 miles, looking into the neighboring states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, as well as New York. The Empire State Building has developed an annual lighting schedule, which honors national holidays and seasons. In 1955 the American society of Civil Engineers named the ESB one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the Western Hemispheres. The building was also named the eighth wonder of the modern world- the only one built in the 20th century. Perhaps to the call attention to its wonder of the world status, the ESB unveiled a series of glass paintings depicting the seven wonders of the ancient world, plus itself. Banister, 1975 The Empire State building is important for any reasons ranging from an architectural marvel to a revenue generator for the City of New York. Most important of all, it is a historic landmark. It is a symbol that every American knows and is proud of. Its functions are many: landmark, office building, tourist attraction, shopping mall, telecommunication/ broadcasting center, symbol of New York and the U. S. to many foreigners. There are round up to 15,000 rooms for office space. There are many doctors, lawyer, insurance agencies as well as a lot of business involved in the fashion industry. It attracts more than 2 million visitors a years. I think it is the citys and the worlds greatest skyscraper.

ALWAYS IN 1787, 1820, 1833, AND 1850, THE NORTH AND THE SOUT essays
ALWAYS IN 1787, 1820, 1833, AND 1850, THE NORTH AND THE SOUT essays Throughout the late 1700s to early-to-mid 1800s, with the stability of the union being frequently challenged over every, occasionally petty, disagreement, somehow, both the north and south have found a common ground. Yet, it was only a matter of time when all these so-called compromises revealed their true color as a series of patchwork, or house of cards, that with every addition makes it that much more unstable. Not until the early 1860s did the house of cards finally give way and it was quite clear that neither the north nor the south was able to find that ever so frequent common ground. In the late 1700s to early 1800s, most of the disputes were over taxes, land settlement, states rights, and legislative representation, though controversial, these were quite a bit easier to deal with and settle as opposed to the slavery issue that would eventually overwhelm society with the introduction of Eli Whitneys cotton gin in 1794. This precipitated a long era of dispute, but fortunately, for men like Henry Clay and John Adams, the cards of the Missouri and the 3/5ths compromises for the most part silenced both parties on terms of slavery for the time being. These times were no stranger to instances of violence such as Shays Rebellion, so in domestic terms, life was not very happy-go-lucky. It was becoming apparent that under the surface of mild sectional strife there was something greater brewing. Maintaining the union was considered as a safeguard against domestic faction and insurrection especially the years after the Treaty of Ghent of the War of 1812 which brought a nd cemented a greater feeling of unity/nationalism, so people would be less apt to try to challenge and threaten both the safety and stability of his/her country. Therefore, it was no surprise that an agreement had been hastily reached. The mid 1800s brought, along with economic growth and nationalism, a wave of social, intellectual, and re...

Boeing 700 essays
Boeing 700 essays The Boeing 700s are very capable of handling duties in the commercial and military world. The Boeing 700s are capable of handling many tasks in the commercial and military world. With the introduction of the 707 in the late fifties to the most recent 777 in the early nineties the, 700s have dominated the commercial world for five decades. They are a line of aircraft that are capable of handling many roles from basic civilian transport to various military needs. They are the people movers of the 20th century. Each with a large carrying capacity combined with the range of a jet aircraft they have moved more people longer distances than what was once thought possible. Boeing has truly produced some of the greatest aircraft in history. The various duties that the 700s perform are quite extraordinary. It all started in the fifties. There was a growing demand for a commercial airliner that could move a greater number of people farther and faster. The age of the jet engine still had not reached to civilian transportation. There was still a fear of the jet because of lack of reliability, but with the advancement of technology the jet engine now had become more even reliable than the piston engine. The need for a jet engine powered plane was growing. Airlines still were looking for a plane that could cross the Atlantic Ocean without a refueling stop. The Lockheed Super Connies, a piston powered plane, were able to cross the Atlantic Ocean with out stopping on the eastbound leg, but they had to stop in Gander, Newfoundland to refuel on the westbound leg. The airlines desired a plane that could easily travel the Atlantic with out a stop. The piston engine just wasnt going to do it, the jet engine was the answer to the question. Boeing realized this and moved to look for a des ign for a jet powered plane. At first Boeing was looking to modify existing aircraft with jet engines to perform the ta...

Creative process Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Creative process - Essay Example tion to such an extent that the ideas can be expressed, selecting an idea or group of ideas from those generated and then producing a possible solution to these concepts. These are often labeled in more scientific fields with such terms as preparation, incubation, illumination and verification. The first two of these processes occur entirely within my mind, almost completely without outside assistance while the second two often include interaction with others as I work to communicate and refine my ideas sufficiently enough to communicate both the idea as well as my solution. Each phase presents its own challenges and approaches. For example, the initial phase is characterized by my interest in solving a problem that I see around me or answering a question I might have about the universe. It can even be something as simply profound as ââ¬Å"why do the whorls in that knot of the tree take on that particular shape?â⬠As I become more and more obsessed with the issue at hand, I begin to gather as much available information about the topic as possible, often allowing myself to freely associate ideas from a number of sources. ââ¬Å"During the initial, intuitive phase, each thought activates, and potentially retrieves information from, a large region containing many memory locationsâ⬠(Gabora, 2002). Thus, my ideas are generated from the things I see around me as well as my memories of things from the past and images I see as I continue to kick an idea around in my head. This is different from the second stage of my process because it is mostly conscious as I actively seek new ideas for new work. The t hinking taking place is done primarily in the conscious range as I attempt to find answers to any gaps in the ideas that are coming forward and to find ways of connecting them in a unique way. In the second phase of creation, and the one I allow myself the greatest emphasis, I allow the information that has been gathered to freely associate in the subconscious mind,

How can hotels be more profitable by using recycling material Essay
How can hotels be more profitable by using recycling material - Essay Example Apart from the food wastes, materials like plastics, broken glasses, aluminum utensils and cardboards are often produced in the hotel industries. Some of these materials when disposed into the environment are harmful to biotic life and eventually result into health problems. The surrounding of the hotel will not be very pleasant and this alone is necessary to drive away clients into other competing hotels. The costs of proper disposal of the waste are also high in some instances causing the overall production cost to be high. A better approach to manage the disposal of waste in order to reduce the overall production cost by the hotel and other industries is through recycling of the waste products. Recycling is the process where by the waste materials from an industry are collected and channeled back as raw materials for the production of new products (Townsend, 1993, p10). These materials would otherwise be buried or burnt as a means of disposal. The recycling process has three main steps. The first is to collect the materials that can be reused. There are those materials that seem to be too won out that do not need to be recycled. The next step is to process the materials into a form that can be reused and the last step is to obtain and use the recycled materials. These are basically the processes involved in recycling in hotels (Townsend, 1993, p10). A point of concern is then to consider how recycling of materials can be effectively adopted by the hotels and how this adoption helps them in maximizing their returns. This is the major issue addressed in the paper. 2. Literature Review The cost of production in barely all sectors of the economy has increased posing economic challenges to organizations in various industries. The cost of raw materials as well as that of transportation has increased in the recent past largely contributing to this increase in the cost of production. Various industries produce wastes which are discharged to the environment posing he alth problems. The supposed consumers of the products of a given company will develop a negative image of the company if it has a filthy surrounding. It is then required that the industries adopt a system of disposal of waste that does have adverse effect on the environment. Unfortunately, the modern means of waste disposal is not always cheap resulting into yet another increase in the cost of production. Besides, some of the materials that are often discharged by companies can be still processed and used for the similar or other purposes by the company or the surrounding community (Townsend, 1993). Recycling of materials in industries is one of the strategic approaches to ensuring sustainability in the organization. The materials that would otherwise be wasted can be put back to the same or different use after some reprocessing. The process has several advantages not only to the organization but also to the community in which the organization is established (Townsend, 1993). Materi als like cardboard, plastic, glass, and aluminum are often produced in hotels and can be recycled. This will yield some saving to the hotels management. The management will liaise with some company that offers the recycling services which will in turn supply the hotel with the recycled products at a reduced cost. Alternatively, the waste products can be sold to the recycling companies providing yet another source of revenue. The recycling of mate
